Technical Assistance services for Poultry Project in the Districts of Gisagara and Ruhango” Promoting Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture Diversification to Fight Malnutrition and Enhance Youth Employment Opportunities.

The poultry farming well managed is the opportunity where households increase their incomes and improve their families’ living conditions and fight against malnutrition. 

ATEDEC was contracted by FAO as implementing partner to provide technical assistance services for the project titles’’ Promoting Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture Diversification to Fight Malnutrition and Enhance Youth Employment Opportunities in East Africa.

The project was undertaken in Save and Gikonko Sectors of Gisagara District and Byimana and Ruhango Sectors of  Ruhango District.

Main activities included the following:

  • Support the establishment of poultry farming units and distribution process of inputs to beneficiaries,
  • Beneficiaries are assisted, supported in egg production and management, organized into cooperatives and linked to inputs producers and other stakeholders,
  • Improved capacities of beneficiaries on increased economic self-reliance,
  • Coordination, M&E and knowledge sharing and learning improved through close supervision of poultry cooperatives.
Introduction of gender aspects by sensitizing women and youth to participate and become major beneficiaries of the project. Women membership in cooperatives was 75% while men were 25%.  Youth membership was 33% of which 55%  are girls and 45 are boys. At cooperative leadership level women/girls represent 52% while men/boys represent 48%.
